Plastic pollution is everywhere. It’s ruining the health of communities across the world, killing wildlife, fuelling the climate crisis and being dumped in oceans. But change is coming.
Thanks to people like you, governments have now started UN negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty.
This treaty has huge potential to set us on the path to a plastic-free future. Now it’s up to us to make sure it delivers on its promises.
Join the call and demand an ambitious and strong global plastics treaty that will limit plastic production and use.
To be an environmental leader on the world stage, the UK must radically reduce the plastic we produce, and stop dumping it on other countries.
At the United Nations Environmental Assembly in March 2022, governments officially adopted a mandate opening negotiations for a global, legally-binding plastics treaty to address the whole lifecycle of plastics.
At the recent round of the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Geneva this year, countries were unable to come to an agreement. But the process will continue and Greenpeace will keep pushing world leaders to put people before the plastics industry.
A strong Global Plastics Treaty will keep oil and gas used to produce plastic in the ground and stop big polluters with their relentless plastic production. A strong treaty will deliver a cleaner, safer planet for us and for future generations.>
A Strong Treaty Must:
- Limit plastic production and use.
- Push big brands to drastically reduce single-use plastic & focus on refillable and reusable products.
- Hold polluting companies accountable.
- Demand full transparency on plastic production, use, import and export.
- Ensure wealthy countries fueling the plastic crisis lead the way and support poorer countries in tackling it.
- Keep oil and gas used to make plastic in the ground.
