Spin the wheel to save a pollinator
There are over 1,500 species of pollinators in the UK. Spin the wheel to find out what makes some of these tiny creatures unique and why they need your help!

Here’s a fact about…

moths
Only two types of moth (out of 2500 species in the UK) will eat your clothes. Some moths, like Luna Moths, can't eat because they don't have a mouth! Moths are important pollinators of many wild plants like orchids. But in the past 50 years, numbers of the bigger moths have declined by over 30%. Of the 2.1 million species that share our planet, 400,000 (roughly a quarter of animal species) are beetles! Their inadvertent pollination as they forage between plants plays an essential role in food chains across the world. But beetles have suffered one of the steepest rates of decline amongst insects due to habitat loss, pesticides and climate change. A strong colony of bees flies the equivalent distance from earth to the moon everyday! But these tiny travellers are dying - a third of wild bee species have declined in the UK over the last 10 years. Over half of butterfly species in the UK are in long-term decline. Last year, a butterfly emergency was declared due to record low numbers. Losing these pretty pollinators would devastate ecosystems across the planet. They’re not many people’s favourite, but flies are the second most important pollinator after bees. Without them, food chains would likely collapse. But in the last 20 years, the UK’s flying insect population has declined by as much as 60%. Out of the thousands of wasp species in the UK, only 9 of them, so-called "social wasps”, tend to sting humans. They may be fearful to some, but wasps perform a vital ecological role controlling pest populations and pollinating crops!
