Dear UK government,
The UK committed to protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, and the only way to stay on track is to establish ocean sanctuaries now. Will you help protect the Sargasso Sea?
Did you know the Sargasso Sea could be the key to unlocking ocean protection all over the world? But the longer it goes unprotected, the more the ocean remains vulnerable to destructive industrial fishing, pollution and climate change.
Right now, we have a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Actions we take can finally make global ocean protection a reality – by creating an ocean sanctuary (like national parks at sea) in the Sargasso that could lead to a network of ocean sanctuaries across the globe.
These clear blue waters in the heart of the Bermuda Triangle are home to a golden floating rainforest of Sargassum seaweed – a haven for endangered species, a nursery for baby sea turtles and a vital migration path for majestic humpback whales.
Yet they are all under serious threat as the Sargasso remains unprotected.
Industrial overfishing is disrupting its delicate ecological balance. Pollution from commercial shipping is releasing toxic fumes, plastic pollution is choking sea creatures and the Sargassum seaweed, one of the biggest carbon sinks, is being destroyed.
If no action is taken to protect it, this unique haven will be lost – along with the hundreds of species that depend on it to survive.
This year is your chance to step up and sign the UN Ocean Treaty into UK law and work with other countries to make the Sargasso Sea the first high seas ocean sanctuary under the new Treaty.
This could change everything: more ocean sanctuaries could be created and unlock ocean protection all over the world so oceans can thrive again.
We urge you to listen to this wave of support for the Sargasso Sea and finally take action to protect it, before the marine life that relies on it is lost forever.
